THE sexy ladies from pop sensation The Saturdays just can't get enough of the limelight.
The fabulous five—Una, Mollie, Vanessa, Rochelle and Frankie—are heading for stardom with their own headline tour which stops off at the Sheffield City Hall next Saturday.
The sassy girl band—who are named after everyone's favourite day of the week—are hoping to inject some shameless fun into the UK charts with their ultimate pop flavour.
The Saturdays had been expected to perform in Rotherham next month after being announced as the top act for the Weekend@Last charity event, which was cancelled due to poor ticket sales.
CHERRY WILSON caught up with band member Una Healey who insists that the group's popularity is growing every day and they are bringing a unique style to the music industry.
Q: You've recently kicked off your own UK tour. How's it going?
A: Amazingly well. It's wonderful to see hundreds of fans at our shows. It's a big change from supporting other artists which is what we've been doing in the past.
It usually takes a big longer for bands to headline their own tour and we've only been around a year. We couldn't really ask for more than that right now.
Q: You're stopping off in South Yorkshire next week. What can fans expect from your show?
A: We've got some great acts supporting us so the crowd will be warmed up nicely. Our fans will hear a lot of the tracks from our debut album and a couple of new songs from our next album. We do a medley of cover songs as well.
There are lots of costume changes and we have a live band which is really good. We all sing live, there is no lip synching, and we do a lot of dancing. It's a really fun show.
Q: What reception have you received so far?
A: It's been amazing. We recently performed in Glasgow and there were 3,000 people. I couldn't believe it. To see them sing along and cheering us and generally loving our show is brilliant.
Q: You were due to headline the Weekend@Last charity event in Rotherham next month which has been cancelled to due poor ticket sales. Some people believe that you're not a big enough band to attract a large crowds to such an event. What would you say to that?
A: Oh I didn't know about that. But I couldn't ask for more than the number of people coming to our own show. So I couldn't really say about that.
We really have a big following and all of our tour is completely sold out. So I can't understand that and I don't know if the poor ticket sales had anything to do with us.
Q: How would you describe your band?
A: We're a fun band that is doing what we love. We're five girls who get on really well and we have some really catchy songs.
Q: What makes you stand out from the other all girl bands out there?
A: Our music is unique to ourselves. You'll find we're a lot different to other girl bands. We're impressive vocally because the five of us are really good singers. We get on so well—we really good friends and we have fun together which you don't get very often with girl bands.
Q: You're all very sexy ladies. Do you never have "slobbish days?"
A: I love it when I go home and I don't have to put on my make up and I can wear my comfy pants. We spend a lot of time in hair and make up when we're working so the last thing I want to do at home is blow dry my hair. I just want to sit around in my tracksuit bottoms—I love nothing more than that.
Q: Highlight of your time together as a band so far?
At the moment it is doing this tour. We've got enough fans to come along and support us and I love performing. Every opportunity that has come along has been a highlight.
Q: Do you think the music industry fail to cater for fans of pop music these days?
A: I think that it's definitely improving. Pop is coming back with the likes of Katie Perry and Lady Gaga. At one stage the music charts was full of indie music and it was all serious. But now pop is coming back.
Q: Your band mate Vanessa hurt herself last week after tripping over a wire on stage. How's she doing?
A: She's great. She's walking around and having lots of positive treatment. She was back on stage that night and has been every night since. She's been sitting down because I think standing for two hours would be too much. But we hope that she will be back dancing by next week.
Q: What can we expect from The Saturdays in the future?
A: After this tour we're going back into the studio to finish our second album and we'll be releasing a single. We're going to Asia in August so we're starting to branch out globally. But we want to establish ourselves here and we've got lots more to do over here first.
Q: So you've got lots coming up then. Is it exhausting for you?
A: There has been a lack of sleep at times but it's all worth it. Music careers don't last a very long time so I'm going to go for it while I can.
